CASS CITY, Mich., Jan. 31, 2014 — Baker College of Cass City will host a free open house for community members to view its new 5,000 square-foot welding lab, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 11, at the Baker College of Cass City Industrial Center, 6201 Church St., Cass City.
The lab, a renovated area within a former milk plant, supports the college’s newly launched welding program.
“The former milk plant is a natural fit for industrial training,” said Karen Easterling, Cass City campus director. “We’re excited to show the community the impressive rehabbed facility and the state-of-the-art equipment available for student use in training for welding careers.”
At the open house, attendees will:
- Tour the lab
- See the metals fabrication equipment
- View demonstrations
- Meet faculty and members of the administration
The lab accommodates up to 24 students. There are 12 two-man workstations. Each station has a MIG (metal inert gas) and TIG (tungsten inert gas) welder. Other equipment that is shared by class members includes multiple torches, a plasma cutter, bench cutter, drill press, grinder, tube bender, band saws and a Scottsman Sheener steel cutter.
Easterling said that the welding program was added to Baker’s curriculum to help meet the needs of employers in the agricultural, manufacturing and refinery industries, especially those located in the thumb area of Michigan.
The one-year certificate and two-year associate degree program provides training for those who have interest in becoming a welding engineer, welding inspector, structural ironworker, custom vehicle designer and metal art sculptor, among other welding professions.
Upon completion of the degree program, graduates will have acquired the skills and knowledge necessary for entry-level employment in the welding industry—skills including oxyacetylene welding, cutting and brazing, shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding and destructive weld testing methods. The curriculum meets or exceeds the requirements set by the American Welding Society.
